São ilustrações de uma rara beleza, publicadas entre 2003 e 2005 na Pública, magazine dominical do jornal Público. Por esses anos, diários e semanários generalistas tinham sistemática dificuldade em posicionar convenientemente as suas revistas de fim de semana. A lenta consolidação das newsmagazines revelava um crescente interesse das mulheres pela leitura de jornais e revistas e a Pública não queria perder o filão. Na remodelação editorial de 7 de Dezembro de 2003 lá estavam as páginas de beleza, sexo, compras, mesa, manias, cartas (adivinhação pelo Tarot em airosa fórmula editorial), e saúde, rubricas claramente apontadas ao público feminino. As mazelas descritas nas página da Saúde, por mais superficiais, não ficavam bem em retrato fotografado. E constituiram excelente pretexto para a entrada em cena da ilustração. Ao longo de 76 semanas, Daniel Lima (Carmona, Angola, 1971) ilustrou com elegância insónias, alergias, silicone mamário e saltos altos, exemplos avulsos de um alargado leque de inquietações que atormentavam as mulheres portuguesas.

As ilustrações oscilavam permanentemente entre a metáfora e a descrição textual sem qualquer quebra de coerência, graças à mestria gráfica de Lima. O ilustrador enriqueceu o registo adicionando ao desenho inicial em grafite ruído digital em forma de grelhas e linhas, sampladas de cadernos escolares, papéis milimétricos e ornatos tipográficos antigos. As figuras são estáticas, em geral inclinadas, lembrando os bonecos de matraquilhos ou da Playmobil. Parece deslocada a comparação entre estes bonecos naifs e o minimalismo sofisticado das imagens de Lima, mas era isto mesmo que o ilustrador buscava, a repetição sistemática de poses, a economia de gestos e expressões faciais, uma espécie de amnésia ou absentismo criativo que tentava disciplinar os sobressaltos temáticos semanais, numa abordagem conceptual em afinidade com outras paragens gráficas, como a obra do ilustrador alemão Henning Wagenbreth ou na repetição modular dos escantilhões de José Eduardo Rocha em páginas do Expresso e d’ O Independente. Na insustentável leveza destas imagens de Daniel Lima reside o inconfessável Graal dos ilustradores: a eternidade.

These illustrations are extremely beautiful, almost unbearably so. They appeared from 2003 to 2005 in Pública, the Sunday magazine supplement that comes with the Público newspaper. At that time, general daily and weekly newspapers were finding it difficult to hit upon the niche for their weekend magazine supplements. That newsmagazines had gradually consolidated a place in the market demonstrated that women were growing more interested in reading newspapers and magazines. So when the Público editorial board was reorganised on 7 December 2003, the paper began to run features on beauty, sex, shopping, foodstuff, manias, health and lifestyle, which were clearly intended for women. But photos were not deemed suitable to show, however demurely, the ills described in the health column. And this is how these illustrations came on the scene. For 76 weeks, Daniel Lima (Lisbon, 1970) illustrated with elegance insomnia, allergies, breast implants and high heels, examples of concerns that beleaguered Portuguese women.

His illustrations constantly move between metaphor and textual description without a break in coherence thanks to Lima’s mastery graphics. He enhanced the initial pencil drawing by adding digital noise in the form of grids and lines as in school exercise books, graph paper and old typographical ornaments. The motionless figures usually appear tilted like toy players in table soccer. To liken these crude doll-like figures with Lima’s elegant minimalism may seem strange, but what he was seeking was precisely the methodical repetition of poses, the economy of gesture and facial expression, a kind of amnesia or creative absentness that sought to bring order to the sudden changes in weekly topics through a conceptual approach akin to other graphic work, such as that of the German illustrator, Henning Wagenbreth. In the unbearable lightness of being of Daniel Lima’s images lies the unconfessed Holy Grail of illustrators: eternity.
